No picks last week, I was too focused on the Trojans. Whoops. Back on it this week. Let's make some money.
Friday Night Special: Penn State @ Illinois OVER 60
After an early season scare against Appalachian State, Penn State have been rolling with back to back convincing wins. With two games against significantly inferior opponents to work out the kinks on offense, the Nittany Lions had no trouble lighting up the score board, posting totals of 51 and 60 against Pitt and Kent State, respectively. However, this is college football and crazy things tend to happen on weeknight games. While I do not see an upset coming, I do believe that the experienced Lovie Smith, with his Santa-esque beard that I love, will have his Illini team ready to play. The over here is one of the best bets of the week.
Army vs Oklahoma (-31)
Kyler Murray and this Sooner offense is rolling per usual, and they have scored enough points in their previous matchups to cover. Their weakness in their secondary, which is why they have struggled to cover the big spreads they’ve been given. Army does not throw the ball often or well enough to write home about, so the Sooner defense should be able to help the offense cover.
Kansas State vs West Virginia (-16)
The Wildcats had a rough start to the season. After barely beating South Dakota to open, they lost by 21 to Mississippi State. They did rebound with a 24-point win against UTSA, which is nothing to write home about. But with all three openers at home, Kansas State will play their first road game this week. The Mountaineers, on the other hand, blew out Tennessee to open, and followed that up with a ho-hum beatdown against Youngstown State. In those games, Will Grier combined for 9 TDs and over 760 yards. After an unplanned bye last week because of Hurricane Florence, Grier’s arm and the rest of the team are rested and ready to pick up where he left off. West Virginia, BIG.
Virginia Tech vs Old Dominion (+28.5)
In a weird turn of events, Virginia Tech goes on the road to Norfolk to face Old Dominion?? Strange. It is the biggest game in Monarch’s history, the game is sold out, and parking passes are going for close to $500… aka two years’ tuition at Old Dominion. All 14 alumni are sure to show up. Foreman Field will be electric. Their mascot is a butterfly. This game is too odd for things to go as planned. I’ll take the four touchdowns.
USC Pick:
USC vs Washington St. OVER 52
Cougar’s coach Mike Leach once said, “"I'm not really good with texting. All this button pushing and what not. I mean can you imagine based on what's happened in the last 15 years. Conversations won't happen 10 years from now… And in the end, it's going to be tough to perpetuate the species. There's no question about that. So we're all going to look into this box and eventually be extinct. That's how it ends."
What does that have to do with this game? Absolutely nothing, I just love Mike Leach. No long analysis this week of my Trojans. Last week was the most embarrassing loss I’ve ever been to, and I was at the infamous Harbaugh “biggest upset ever” game. Just awful. The Trojans have been solid at home under Helton, though, and Tee Martin is on the hot seat with his offense, so they have no choice but to figure it out (or don’t, because at this point, nothing would surprise me). Combine that with Leach’s offense, and this will go over. If USC loses, you can find me six feet under. My dog is counting on you J.T.
